About Us
Independent of Autism was founded in 2015 as a 501c3 with their home office in
Hampstead, MD. Anna Curtis is IOA’s founder, Executive Director and wears many more “hats.”
Anna founded IOA after volunteering with the local Special Olympics with her son, then 3. Anna
began and ran the Special Olympics’ Young Athletes program for ages 2-7. It was during that
time Anna saw how many young special needs children there were in her area, many of whom
were on the autism spectrum. Many of the children did not just have one special need but
multiple. Anna was drawn to help these children AND their families and reminded her of her
classroom days. Anna is still in contact with several of the Young Athletes’ families, some of
whom attend her social groups.
Anna went on to attend graduate school perusing a Post Baccalaureate in Autism Studies then an
Individualized master’s degree in Autism, minor social skills at Towson University. Just before
graduation, Anna began IOA, and the rest is history.

Anna also holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and tries to volunteer with her local
Special Olympics as much as time will allow. Her son is now 17 and often helps his mom with
IOA at community events.

We believe that every child deserves the chance to thrive, regardless of their diagnosis.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide a safe, supportive place for individuals on the autism spectrum as well as their families. We want the individuals we serve to one day be Independent of Autism.

IOA welcomes all special needs not just autism.

Independent of Autism wants to provide the tools one needs to better navigate life within the individual’s toolbox.
